Why proximity isn’t enough to match a pet with a sitter

The last real shift in this industry was moving pets out of kennels. Matching never caught up.

Fifteen years ago, pet-care apps did something important. They helped move pets out of kennels and into people’s homes.

That was one of the last major structural changes in the category.

After that, the matching model froze.

Who is nearby.
Who is available.
Who has stars.

That is still how most of the industry decides who spends time with your dog.

It is a logistics problem dressed up as care.

Maps got better. Reviews got louder. Supply got thicker. The question at the center of the product did not change. A 90-pound anxious rescue and a calm senior two blocks away can still be handed to the same person because both searches returned the same ZIP code.

We built askKynos because that is the wrong first question.

The old model scores the neighborhood. Smart Match scores the fit.

Smart Match starts with a persistent profile of the individual pet — temperament, energy, routine, environment, health needs, medications, behavior, comfort around other animals, and the details a family usually keeps in their head.

It then compares that profile with a caregiver’s actual capabilities: the kinds of pets they are good with, the needs they are equipped to handle, their experience, their comfort level, and only then whether they can be there.

Location and availability still matter. They are constraints. They are not the match.

That distinction is the whole product.

If matching begins with proximity, the platform never has to understand the animal. It only has to understand a map. That is why incumbents can get very large without getting any closer to the pet. Scale loves a simple query. Care does not.

What we actually compare

  • The pet’s recorded story, not a blank booking form
  • Needs and temperament, not only breed and weight
  • Caregiver capability and experience, not only a star average
  • Continuity after the visit, so the next match does not start from zero

The difference is not a prettier list of people. The difference is that understanding accumulates. The profile exists before the booking. What is learned in care can travel with the pet. The next sitter or walker does not have to reconstruct the animal from a text thread.

That is the opposite of a marketplace that introduces two people and then steps out of the way.

We came to this the unglamorous way — as pet parents and as sitters — watching families try to paste a life’s worth of knowledge into a last-minute message, and watching good caregivers accept jobs they should have declined because the platform never told them what the job actually was.

Better understanding should lead to a better match. That sentence is not marketing. It is the spec.

The same starting point applies across sitting, walking, daycare, and other care. The service changes. The animal does not. A platform that understands the pet should not throw that understanding away every time the job is an hour long instead of a night.

The companies that defined this category are very good at finding someone close. We are building the company that finds someone right.

Trusted pet care should start with more than a ZIP code. It should start with understanding.
